Plasma Weapons

Plasma weapons are energy weapons that use powerful magnetic coils to form and accelerate a compact plasma clot. Inside the weapon, the working gas is converted into plasma, after which an electromagnetic field compresses it into a short-lived “packet” and ejects it at a velocity of several kilometers per second.

Unlike laser weapons, a plasma charge has mass and carries not only an enormous amount of thermal energy, but also significant impulse. Impact is accompanied by instantaneous heating of the surface to melting temperature, formation of a plasma torch, and a strong localized impact. Armor is not simply melted — it suffers thermal shock, deforms, develops cracks, and internal mechanisms can be damaged even without full penetration.

Plasma is most effective at short and medium ranges. During flight, the plasma clot gradually cools through interaction with the atmosphere, losing temperature and stability. This is why at long ranges its penetration capability noticeably decreases. In the airless vacuum of space, conversely, plasma charges retain their energy much longer.

A shot is accompanied by a brief flash and the characteristic crack of superconducting magnetic coils. An ionized halo forms around the barrel, and the charge leaves a thin trail of light in the air. After a series of shots, the weapon requires cooling: most of the energy is converted into heat, which must be conducted away from the plasma generation chamber and magnetic system.

Plasma weapons consume significantly more energy than conventional electromagnetic accelerators, and are therefore equipped with high-density energy cells or compact reactors. Modern models have a multi-stage overheating protection system. If the temperature exceeds the permissible limit, the automation blocks firing until the cooling cycle is completed.

In the Hetmanate’s troops, plasma guns are used primarily by Serdiuks, Terminators, and heavy infantry units. They are designed for engaging armored vehicles, combat machines, robots, and infantry in exoskeletons. Plasma is inferior to Melta in the ability to instantly burn through super-thick armor, but surpasses it in range, versatility, and rate of fire, making it one of the primary weapon systems of the Hetmanate.

On military spaceships, colossal Energiya Plasma Cannon systems are installed, which were developed for engaging and destroying enormous military ships at distances of thousands of kilometers.
