Energiya Shipboard Plasma Cannon
“Energiya” is a universal medium-range shipboard plasma system designed for engaging combat ships, heavy interceptors, and armored targets. In the Hetmanate fleet, it occupies an intermediate position between the long-range “Shylo” laser systems and the close-range “Melta” launch system, combining high rate of fire, significant destructive power, and effectiveness at medium distances.
Unlike a laser, which engages the target exclusively with light energy, “Energiya” forms a compact plasma clot, compressed by a powerful magnetic field. After firing, magnetic accelerators impart a velocity of several kilometers per second, and the plasma’s own magnetic field allows it to retain its shape throughout most of the flight.
Upon impact, the plasma charge simultaneously transfers kinetic and thermal energy to the target. The upper layers of armor are instantly heated to melting temperature, while the shock wave from the impact causes cracks, deformation of structural elements, and damage to internal equipment. Even if the armor is not fully penetrated, internal mechanisms, targeting systems, and electronics often fail due to overheating and thermal shock.
“Energiya” achieves its greatest effectiveness at medium ranges. At long distances, the plasma charge gradually loses stability and part of its accumulated energy, while at close range it is inferior in penetration capability to the specialized “Melta” launch system.
Each system is equipped with an autonomous cooling system and rapid energy storage units, allowing sustained serial fire without the need for lengthy reloading. It is precisely this high rate of fire that makes “Energiya” especially dangerous during maneuverable space battles, when the enemy constantly changes course and does not allow a laser beam to be held on a single point for long.
“Energiya” plasma cannons are installed on Tavr-class ships, heavy escort frigates, and some modernized “Dubs.” They are most often used to wear down enemy armor before “Shylo” or “Melta” systems enter the battle. In addition, they are effective against medium-class ships that are too tough for “Shylo-M” but not large enough to warrant expending a strategic laser charge.
In the fleet, there is a simple combat formula:
- “Shylo” — penetrates.
- “Energiya” — breaks.
- “Melta” — finishes the burn.
This is why “Energiya” is called the workhorse of the Space Fleet. It is not the most powerful weapon of the Hetmanate, yet it is its salvos that most often accompany every major space battle.
Among gunners, it is said:
“If the laser seeks a weak spot, ‘Energiya’ creates one itself.”
