Laser Weapons
Laser weapons are the most widespread type of small arms in the troops of the Federation. They combine simple construction, high reliability, and an almost inexhaustible ammunition supply, which has made them the standard weapon of most infantry units.
The operating principle is based on emitting a short pulse of coherent light of extremely high power. The beam propagates at the speed of light, so it has no noticeable flight time and does not require target leading. For the shooter, this means extremely high accuracy even at long distances.
A laser does not penetrate armor by force of impact, like a kinetic projectile, and does not transfer significant mass, like plasma. Its damage is achieved through instantaneous heating of the material. Unprotected targets suffer severe thermal injuries, light cover is quickly burned through, and armor gradually loses strength at the point of impact. Against modern heavy armor, a single shot is usually insufficient; however, a series of precise hits can overheat protective layers, damage sensors, optics, or expose vulnerable nodes.
Laser weapons produce almost no recoil, require no cartridge casings or frequent reloading mechanisms, and have a minimum of moving parts. The main limitations are energy consumption and emitter heating. After prolonged continuous fire, the system automatically reduces the rate of fire or switches to cooling mode.
In atmosphere, laser effectiveness depends on weather conditions. Smoke, dust, dense fog, heavy rain, or snow scatter part of the beam’s energy, reducing range and penetration capability. In the vacuum of space, where there is no scattering, the laser demonstrates maximum accuracy and loses almost no energy over great distances.
Thanks to the low cost per shot, ease of maintenance, and high reliability, laser rifles, carbines, and machine guns form the basis of armament for Haiduks, Serdiuks, and most Hetmanate garrisons. For most soldiers, the laser rifle is what gunpowder-based automatic weapons once were — a universal tool for any battlefield.
In the military doctrine of the Federation, each subsequent class of energy weapon solves tasks that the previous one cannot:
- Laser Weapons — universal weapon against manpower and light cover.
- Plasma — engagement of heavy infantry, robots, and light armored vehicles.
- Melta — destruction of tanks, fortifications, and the toughest armored targets.
