Shylo-M Laser System

“Shylo-M” is a lightweight shipboard version of the strategic “Shylo” complex, designed to equip interceptors, frigates, escort ships, and heavy fighters. It retains the main operating principle — engaging the target with an extremely narrow and precise laser beam — but sacrifices power for a fast firing cycle and compactness.

Unlike the larger “Shylo,” which accumulates energy for a single devastating shot, “Shylo-M” operates with short pulses lasting from a few milliseconds to tenths of a second. Each pulse burns through a small area of armor or overheats the ship’s external systems. A series of precise hits allows the gradual destruction of the target’s defenses, disabling engines, sensors, communication systems, or turrets.

The main advantage of the system is its extremely high targeting speed. The emitter mirrors can instantly change the beam’s direction without rotating the entire gun mount, allowing it to track even the most maneuverable ships. Because of this, “Shylo-M” is equally effective as an offensive weapon and as a means of anti-missile defense.

For engaging high-speed targets, the system uses an automatic tracking system. The onboard computer analyzes the enemy’s trajectory, compensates for the ship’s own motion and hull micro-vibrations, holding the beam on a single point throughout the entire pulse. Precision, not power, is the main advantage of this complex.

The energy consumption of “Shylo-M” is tens of times lower than that of the strategic model, so the system can fire almost continuously, limited only by the cooling system’s capabilities. After a long series of shots, the automation reduces power or takes a short pause to cool the optics and emitters.

In the Hetmanate’s combat doctrine, “Shylo-M” has become the primary weapon of space interceptors. It allows high-precision duels at long ranges, interception of torpedoes, destruction of enemy fighters, and the gradual “dismantling” of corvette- and frigate-class ships. Against heavy cruisers or dreadnoughts, its power is insufficient for rapid armor penetration; however, it can blind the ship, disable its sensors, engines, or other critically important systems, preparing the target for a strike by the main fleet.

The fleet has even developed an unofficial classification of these systems:

• “Shylo” — strategic laser for penetrating the hulls of large ships.
• “Shylo-M” — tactical laser for maneuverable space combat, interception, and high-precision engagement of enemy systems.

Among interceptor pilots, it is said:
