SHYLO Laser System
“Shylo” is a super-heavy strategic-class laser system installed on battleships, dreadnoughts, and orbital fortresses of the Hetmanate. Unlike conventional combat lasers, its primary purpose is the engagement of large spacecraft at interplanetary distances.
The system consists of a multi-kilometer optical path, a phased emitter array, and a gigantic energy storage block. Before firing, energy from the ship’s reactor is accumulated in superconducting capacitors over several seconds or even minutes. Only after reaching the required charge does the system generate a pulse whose power exceeds the capabilities of any tactical laser weapon by many orders of magnitude.
The name “Shylo” (Awl) was given to the system because of its operating principle. It does not destroy the target with an explosion or vaporize it instantly. Instead, a narrow beam with extremely low angular divergence concentrates colossal energy into a spot only a few centimeters in diameter, even at hundreds or thousands of kilometers. In a matter of seconds, it burns through armor, passing one after another through external plates, structural framework, sealed bulkheads, and internal compartments of the ship. If the beam reaches the reactor, munitions storage, or cooling mains, the consequences for the target become catastrophic.
In space, where there is no atmosphere, the beam loses almost no energy to dispersion. The main factors limiting range are light diffraction, the accuracy of targeting systems, and microscopic vibrations of the ship’s own hull. Therefore, “Shylo” is equipped with a dedicated stabilization complex, laser rangefinders, and adaptive optics that compensate for even the smallest vibrations.
A shot lasts from several tenths of a second to several seconds. During this time, the ship must hold the beam on a single point of the enemy’s hull. Even a slight displacement reduces effectiveness, so aiming the “Shylo” is one of the most complex tasks for onboard computing systems.
The main drawback of the system is its energy consumption. A single shot can require as much energy as the ship uses for maneuvering over several minutes. After a salvo, the mirrors, emitters, and power electronics accumulate an enormous amount of heat that must be dumped through powerful radiators. While the system cools and accumulates a new charge, it cannot fire again.
“Shylo” is most effective against large and relatively slow-moving targets — dreadnoughts, carriers, orbital platforms, and space stations. Against fighters or corvettes, it is rarely used: the power is too great and the shot preparation cycle too slow to be justified.
