Missile Systems
Missile systems are auxiliary guided weapons of the Hetmanate Space Fleet, designed for engaging ships at long ranges, penetrating anti-missile defenses, and destroying high-value targets. Unlike laser and plasma weapons, missiles are independent combat vehicles capable of altering their flight trajectory, pursuing the target, and selecting the most vulnerable point for impact.
Each missile is equipped with its own low-power reactor, navigation system, and maneuvering thrusters. After launch, it maintains communication with the carrier ship; however, if the control link is lost, it can complete the attack autonomously, using onboard sensors and embedded targeting algorithms.
The main advantage of missiles is the ability to attack a target from any direction. They can perform prolonged flanking maneuvers, bypass defensive battle formations, synchronize arrival times, or simultaneously approach a ship from multiple vectors, overloading its anti-missile defense systems.
Warheads may vary depending on the mission:
- Kinetic — accelerate a heavy penetrating element to ultra-high velocity, using its colossal kinetic energy to breach armor.
- Plasma — after penetrating the outer layers of the hull, create a powerful thermal explosion that disables internal systems.
- Melta — equipped with a compact “Melta” system that, upon contact with the hull, burns through armor for several seconds, creating an opening for further damage.
- Electromagnetic — generate a high-power pulse, temporarily disabling sensors, communication systems, and onboard electronics.
Despite their high effectiveness, missiles remain the most expensive type of shipboard armament. Their production requires complex electronics, reactors, guidance systems, and costly materials. This is why captains rarely use them without necessity, reserving them for decisive moments of battle or strikes against the most valuable targets.
Missiles are actively countered by “Shylo-M” laser systems, automated plasma turrets, and decoy thermal and electromagnetic targets. Because of this, modern missiles are equipped with armored casings, electronic warfare systems, jamming devices, and unpredictable maneuvering algorithms.
In the Hetmanate’s combat doctrine, missiles are used to begin a battle or to finish it. The first massed salvo forces the enemy to reveal their anti-missile defense system and break battle formation, while the last one finishes off damaged ships that have already lost the ability to effectively defend themselves.
Among fleet officers, it is said:
“A cannon wins a duel. A missile wins the hunt.”
