Melta Launch System

“Melta” Launch System is a heavy shipboard thermal weapon designed to breach the toughest armor at short ranges. It is the primary weapon of assault and defense ships of the “Dub” class, although individual systems may also be installed on other heavy combat ships.

Unlike “Shylo” laser systems, which inflict damage through prolonged concentration of light energy, the “Melta” launch system ejects a narrow stream of superheated plasma saturated with metallic aerosol. The stream is contained by a magnetic field only over a limited distance, after which it quickly disperses. This is why “Melta” is classified as a close-range space combat weapon.

Before firing, the system accumulates an enormous energy reserve, heating the working medium to a plasma state. Powerful magnetic emitters form a dense thermal jet that literally cuts into the enemy’s armor. At a distance of several tens of kilometers, the temperature in the contact zone is so high that multi-layered composite plates begin to melt almost instantly, and the ship’s internal structures suffer catastrophic overheating.

Unlike conventional plasma weapons, “Melta” relies almost not at all on kinetic impact. Its main advantage is the transfer of maximum thermal energy over a minimal area. If a laser gradually burns through armor, and plasma combines thermal and impact damage, “Melta” literally turns the target’s material into incandescent melt.

To achieve maximum effectiveness, the beam must be held on a single point of the enemy’s hull for several seconds. This is why the system is equipped with high-precision stabilizers that compensate for the mutual movement of ships and allow continuous focusing of the thermal stream on the selected area of armor.

After each salvo, the emitters, magnetic coils, and thermal chamber accumulate an enormous amount of heat. Cooling takes significantly longer than in laser systems, and during operation, the ship’s radiators emit so much energy that they make the ship highly visible to infrared sensors.

The greatest danger posed by the “Melta” launch system is to heavy ships. It can melt through cruiser armor in a short time, open a path for boarding teams, or damage reactor compartments, cooling mains, or structural members of the hull. At the same time, its effectiveness against fast interceptors is low — keeping the thermal jet on a maneuverable target is extremely difficult.

In the Hetmanate’s combat doctrine, the “Melta” launch system is considered the weapon of last argument. If a ship has managed to close close enough to employ it at full power, the enemy’s fate is almost sealed.

Among the sailors of the Space Fleet, it is said:

“‘Shylo’ opens the door, and ‘Melta’ burns what lies behind it.”
