Chumak-Class Ship
Chumak — a small transport ship with a Warp drive, the most numerous type of interstellar vessel across all empires. Unlike the giant DARYAs, which number only in the hundreds, the Hetmanate fields thousands of Chumaks.
The ship earned its name from the chumaks — historical Cossack traders and carters who, for centuries, hauled salt, fish, grain, and goods across the entire steppe from the Dnipro to Crimea and the Don on Old Earth. Likewise, the space Chumak is the workhorse of interstellar trade and logistics.

Construction
Externally, the Chumak resembles a simplified, miniature version of the DARYA — the same central trunk with “bone”-rails, but significantly shorter (2–5 km long) and with fewer arches. Instead of dozens of Warp shields, the Chumak carries only 2–4 shields, sufficient to create a Warp corridor around its compact hull.
The Warp system operates on the same principle as the DARYA: the Warp shields accelerate along magnetic rails, rotating around the trunk, creating a cylindrical zone of warped space. Once the shields reach the required speed — instantaneous transition. The difference is only one of scale: the ship’s lower mass means less load on the shields, shorter spin-up time (8–12 minutes), and lower Warp fuel consumption (2–4 tons per jump instead of dozens). The trade-off: the small radius of the Warp corridor means the Chumak cannot take escort ships along inside the cylinder — only what fits in its own hangars or is mounted externally on specialized cradles.
Power System
Instead of six Horizon-M reactors, the Chumak carries a single Horizon-S (“Simplified”) reactor — a lightweight version of the large reactor, optimized for civilian and auxiliary vessels. Output: approximately 0.3 exajoules per day. This is sufficient to power the Warp shields, life support, hangar equipment, and basic protective fields, but insufficient to power any serious weaponry. Most Chumaks carry no weapons at all, relying on the speed of loading-spinup-jump or on escort ships traveling alongside.
Role and Application
Chumaks are the circulatory system of the interstellar economy. They handle tasks for which a DARYA is excessively large and too expensive:

Troop rotation. Moving individual companies, battalions, or small units between systems. A Chumak takes aboard 2,000–5,000 troops with equipment and delivers them in a single jump.

Resupply. Regular runs with fuel (including Warp fuel from Europa), ammunition, provisions, and spare parts. A typical Chumak performs 2–4 jumps per week.

Civilian transport. Relocating colonists, delivering equipment for new settlements, evacuating civilians from combat zones. In passenger configuration, a Chumak can carry up to 20,000 people.

Trade. Private Chumaks (roughly one-third of the fleet is owned by trading companies rather than the Sich) ply the routes between systems, transporting goods, raw materials, and rare substances.

Mobile hospital. Some Chumaks are converted into medical transports capable of evacuating the wounded from frontline systems to rear hospitals.
Escort
Unlike the DARYA, the Chumak has no permanent escort squadron. In wartime, Chumaks typically travel in caravans — groups of 5–15 ships escorted by 2–4 Tavrs or hired escort vessels. In peacetime, most Chumaks fly alone — the risk of Khartsyz attack is considered acceptable compared to the cost of permanent escort for every run.
Some trading guilds install 2–4 Shilo-M laser mounts on their Chumaks to deter pirates, but such a ship is incapable of fighting a full-scale engagement.
Production
The simplicity of the design allows Chumaks to be built not only at major orbital shipyards but also at regional berths in dozens of systems. Thanks to component standardization (a significant share of parts are unified with the DARYA, simplifying spare-parts logistics), production of a single ship takes 18–30 months. It is precisely this speed and low cost that made the Chumak the most numerous Warp-capable ship of humanity.
Interestingly, although Warp-shield technology is common to all empires (developed on Europa Jovian as an international project), the Chumak’s design differs noticeably from state to state. Hetmanate Chumaks are distinguished by their characteristic “skeleton” of arches, whereas, for example, imperial analogues feature a more monolithic hull with retractable shields.
