Nullification — a severe punishment for Serdiuks and Haiduks. A person sentenced to nullification loses their Cossack military rank, usually being demoted to the lowest rank after jura. They also lose all service payments. A nullified person cannot hold command positions in military and palanka councils. Effectively, the person begins their service from scratch. The punishment is imposed for violations of Cossack customs, conduct unbecoming during battle, abandoning a comrade in danger, and the like. The Cossack loses their chub (topknot) and mustache.
